Lesotho–Turkey relations

Lesotho–Turkey relations are the foreign relations between Lesotho and Turkey. The Turkish ambassador in Pretoria, South Africa is also accredited to Lesotho.[1] The embassy of Lesotho in Rome, Italy is accredited to Turkey.[1]

Diplomatic Relations

Turkey and Lesotho historically had friendly relations. The relations were tense[2] for a short while after the 1970 election in Lesotho when Jonathan suspended[3] the constitution, arrested and expelled King Moshoeshoe II, and banned opposition parties.[4] Relations improved when King Moshoeshoe II was restored as head of state.[5] Through TIKA, Turkey has been building schools and hospitals in Lesotho.[6]

  • Trade volume between the two countries was 1.65 million USD in 2019 (Turkish exports/imports: 1.62/0.03 million USD).[1]
