On 14 April 2014 pro-Russian activists captured Kirovske's town hall and declared that the city was part of the separatist Donetsk People's Republic.[3] Since then the city stayed under separatist control.[4]
In 2016 the city was renamed Khrestivka as part of decommunization in Ukraine. The city's name change process is temporarily suspended as it is not controlled by the government of Ukraine.
