Indigenous Area (Taiwan)
Indigenous Areas (Chinese: 原住民族地區; pinyin: yuánzhùmínzú dìqū; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Goân-chū bîn-cho̍k tē-khu) are the designed administrative divisions in Taiwan with significant populations of the Taiwanese aborigines. These divisions are granted higher level of local autonomy in order to protect languages and cultures of the Taiwanese aborigines. Currently there are 55 such divisions.[1]

History
On 31 October 2001, the Indigenous Peoples Employment Rights Protection Act was promulgated. In order to implement the indigenous people's region provision of the act, the Council of Indigenous Peoples planned for 30 townships, districts and cities on the mountain areas and 25 townships, districts and cities as the indigenous people's regions. The council then applied to the Executive Yuan for approval on 23 January 2002. On 16 April 2002, The Executive Yuan agreed to designate all of the 55 areas as the indigenous people's regions. The indigenous people's regions was promulgated and implemented on 5 February 2005.[2]
