Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up 2007

Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up 2007 was the national final developed by the BBC in order to select the British entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. Six acts competed in a televised show on 17 March 2007 held at the Maidstone Studios in Maidstone, Kent and hosted by Terry Wogan and Fearne Cotton. The winner was selected entirely through a public vote over two rounds. The show was broadcast on BBC One between 19:30 and 21:30 GMT.

Competing entries

A number of rumours circulated about the finalists competing in the national final, including Scissor Sisters, Queentastic, Ace of Base (which was later denied on their website sometime prior to BBC's official reveal) and Daz Sampson & Carol Decker (Sampson submitted the song "Goodbye" but the BBC felt it was too soon for him to enter since he represented the UK the previous year).[2][3][4] Morrissey was approached in January 2007 to write a song for the national final, but it wasn't produced in time. Justin Hawkins & Beverlei Brown replaced The Puppini Sisters who had been earlier approached by the BBC due to their submitted material, "And She Sang" and "Don't Call Again", were considered unsuitable for the competition. The six competing artists and songs were announced on 28 February 2007.

Final

Six acts compete in the televised final on 17 March 2007. The winner was selected by a public vote over two rounds. In the first round, the top two songs, "I'll Leave My Heart" performed by Cyndi and "Flying the Flag (for You)" performed by Scooch, advanced to the second round. In the second round, the public vote selected the winner, "Flying the Flag (for You)" performed by Scooch.

During the announcement of the final result, Wogan announced the winner to be Cyndi while simultaneously, Cotton revealed the winner to be Scooch. Wogan's announcement was louder than Cotton's, leading many people to believe Cyndi was the winner. After several seconds of confusion, it was finally confirmed that Scooch were the winners. The BBC later issued a written apology, blaming the blunder on "live TV".

At Eurovision

As a member of the Big Four, the United Kingdom automatically qualified to compete in the final held on 12 May. Scooch was drawn to perform nineteenth in the line-up. At the end of the contest, the song finished in 22nd place with only 19 points, ahead of only Ireland, who came last. Nevertheless, the United Kingdom still managed to receive a maximum score of 12pts from Malta.

Unofficial Representation

Despite Scooch being the official representatives, the UK was unofficially representing Eurovision for other countries.

  • For the second year in a row Turkey employed British dancers.
  • The Greek representative Sarbel was born and brought up in London.
  • The Andorran lead singer is from the UK.
  • One of the members of the Polish entry, The Jet Set is also from the UK.
