Toni Severin

Toni Gae Severin is a New Zealand politician who became an MP in the New Zealand parliament at the 2020 general election as a representative of the ACT New Zealand party.[1]

Early life and career

Toni Severin is resident in the Christchurch East electorate. Severin is a business owner, and previously spent 14 years as a laboratory technician for Canterbury District Health Board.[2]

Severin was first selected as an ACT candidate in 2008, placed 54th on the ACT party list and contesting the Christchurch Central electorate. She received 419 votes and placed sixth out of nine candidates.[3]

She contested Christchurch Central again in 2011 and 2014, placed 17th and 11th on the party list respectively. In 2011, she received 110 votes, and placed last out of six candidates.[4] In 2014, she received 122 votes, placing her sixth out of eight candidates.[5]

At the 2017 general election, she contested Christchurch East and was placed 10th on the ACT party list. She won 137 electorate votes in Christchurch East, placing her last out of the seven candidates.[6]

In the 2020 general election, Severin was placed 9th on the ACT party list and ran for the Christchurch East electorate. Preliminary results indicate Severin received her best result yet, 1340 votes, placing fourth out of nine candidates. She did not win the electorate, but ACT won 7.6% of the party vote, which entitled it to 10 MPs, including Severin.[7][8][9] She is ACT's spokesperson for ACC and Corrections.[10]

Political views

Severin is a licensed gun-owner, and believes the gun control laws passed after the Christchurch mosque attack were rushed and would not have prevented the attack.[11]

Personal life

Severin runs a business in Christchurch with her husband, with branches in Auckland and Wellington.[12][13] The Companies Register shows her as director and shareholder of Vess 2013, a residential rental company, and Jet-X Wellington, which steam-cleans building exteriors.[14] A third company, Unique Links NZ, a jewellery wholesaling company, is in the process of being removed from the Companies Register for non-filing of tax returns.[15]
