List of Los Angeles Dodgers seasons
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the second most successful franchise in the National League and the third-most successful and second-most wealthy in Major League Baseball after the New York Yankees.[1] The franchise was formerly based in Brooklyn and known originally as the "Grays" or "Trolley Dodgers" after the trams which supporters had to avoid to enter games.[2] Later it became known successively as the "Bridegrooms", "Superbas", "Dodgers" and "Robins"; the present "Dodgers" was firmly established in 1932.
The franchise has won seven World Series, twenty four pennants, appeared in the playoffs thirty three times and won the their division nineteen times.[3] Like the Yankees and Cardinals, the Dodgers have never lost 100 games in a season since World War I, with their worst record being in 1992 with 63 wins and 99 losses. The Dodgers' .682 winning percentage in 1953 stood as the best single-season winning percentage in franchise history until 2020, when the Dodgers posted a .717 mark (43–17) during a shortened 60-game season.[4] Their most successful period, between 1947 (Jackie Robinson’s first season) and 1966 (Sandy Koufax’s retirement at the age of 30 following the 1966 World Series due to chronic arthritis and bursitis in his pitching elbow), featured ten World Series appearances (four championships) and only two seasons with 71 or more losses (one of them the year they moved to Los Angeles after a dispute over stadium funding).[2] Their other period of sustained success was from 1973-1988, which was overseen by the end of Walter Alston’s managerial career (Dodgers’ manager from 1954-1976) and of most of Tommy Lasorda’s (1976-1996). During this fifteen year period, the team won two championships (tied for first during this stretch), five pennants (first during this stretch) and won their division seven times. The two consecutive 89-loss seasons in 1986 and 1987 was followed by an improbable World Championship in 1988, which was highlighted by Kirk Gibson's walk-off homerun in Game 1 of the World Series. Currently, the Dodgers are in a stretch where they have won a World Series, three pennants, and eight straight divisions, dating back to 2013, a year after Guggenheim Baseball Management brought the team for $2.15 billion.
Since moving to Los Angeles, the Dodgers played for four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving to their current home of Dodger Stadium in 1962. [5] In Brooklyn, they played predominantly at Washington Park (1898-1912) and historic Ebbets Field (1913-1957)
