Major events
Vacancies and special elections
- Democrat Shirley Weber (79th–San Diego) resigned to become California's first African-American Secretary of State. On December 22, 2020, it was reported that Governor Newsom nominated Weber to succeed Alex Padilla, since he was appointed to succeed Kamala Harris as U.S. Senator from California in January 2021.[2]
Leadership changes
On January 20, 2021, Senate minority leader Shannon Grove was ousted as leader after the 2021 United States Capitol attack, when Grove incorrectly blamed the attack on antifa; this triggered the caucus revolt and Scott Wilk was elected leader.[3]
