The Apple Watch Series 5 is the sixth-generation model of the Apple Watch. It was released on September 20, 2019 during an Apple Special Event alongside the iPhone 11. Its principal improvement over its predecessor is the inclusion of an always-on display.[2][1] It received mostly positive reviews from critics, with generally praised the always-on display, but criticized the paucity of improvements relative to the previous generation of the Apple Watch. Overview

The Apple Watch Series 5 features an always-on display. This is enabled by an energy saving LTPO OLED screen and a low-power screen driver capable of refresh rates as low as once per second. The always-on display was not included in the Apple Watch Series 4.[3]

Additional improvements include:

  • International Emergency Calling, enabling emergency calls in over 150 countries
  • the addition of a magnetometer, which enables a compass function
  • doubling of storage capacity to 32 GB
  • improved ambient light sensor

The Apple Watch Series 5 also brought back the "Edition" style, with a ceramic model that had been absent from the previous generation, and a new titanium model which comes in two colors: Natural and Space Black.[4]

Reception

Critics generally gave it a positive review. CNET gave it a score of 4/5, concluding, "The Apple Watch continues to be one of the best smartwatches, but it remains limited by being an iPhone accessory for now."[3] Digital Trends gave it a score of 4.5/5.[5] The Verge gave it a score of 9/10.[6]
