Elina Svitolina won the title, defeating Sloane Stephens in the final, 3–6, 6–2, 6–2. Svitolina became the first Ukrainian in history to triumph at this tournament, and the first player to win the tournament while going undefeated since Serena Williams in 2013. This was also the first time since 2013 that both finalists went undefeated in the round robin stage of the competition.
Naomi Osaka, Stephens and Kiki Bertens made their debuts in the event.
For the first time since the current round robin format was reintroduced in 2003, the first two matches played in each group were all won by the lower-ranked player. It also the first time that the top four seeds were eliminated in the round robin stage, leaving the fifth to eighth seeds to qualify for the semifinals.
