History

With district reorganization in 2006, a number of regions previously associated with Secondary School were reassigned to Stephen Lewis Secondary School (Block 10). Students entering Grade 9 and 10 in 2006 residing in Block 10 were transferred from Secondary School to Stephen Lewis Secondary School. This reorganization reduced Secondary School's student body from about 2000 students to about 1,100 students.[2]

The school offers AP courses in Science (Chemistry, Biology and Physics), English, History and Math (Advanced functions, Calculus and Vectors). Extracurricular activities

Radio Station

Secondary School is home to 90.7 RAV-FM, one of four licensed high school radio stations in Ontario and part of Secondary School's broadcasting course.[4]

Building

Architecturally, Secondary School has a modern exterior and interior design. The school consists of a three-storey building and portables. The building's first floor consists of the main lobby, principal stage, and cafeteria. The second floor houses the library and the radio station.[4]

School name

The York Region District School Board voted to have the name Vaughan removed from its name for historical links to slavery. The school was named after the city in which it is located, which was named after Benjamin Vaughan, a British Parliamentarian who owned many Jamaican slaves and was a known anti-abolitionist.[5] As a result, the school currently appears to the public as "Secondary School" until a new name is decided.[6]
