Undead Unluck

Undead Unluck (Japanese: アンデッドアンラック, Hepburn: Andeddo Anrakku) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshifumi Tozuka. It has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since January 2020, and collected into four tankōbon volumes as of December 2020.

Synopsis

After being saved from suicide by Undead (Andy), Fuuko Izumo (Fuuko, also known as Unluck) and Andy end up participating in a team whose missions are proposed by a book called Apocalypse (黙示録, Apokaripuso), which has supernatural powers. There are people with the ability to negate the rules of the world called Negators (否定者, Hitei-sha). The Union (ユニオン, Yunion) is an organisation of Negators specialized in the hunting of UMA (ユーマ, Yūma), or Unidentified Mysterious Animals, creatures created by God, in order to complete the quests of Apocalypse, and they also must defeat a group of Negators that opposes the Union, called Under (アンダー, Andā).

Characters
Andy (アンディ, Andi)
He is obsessed with finding a way to kill himself, and takes an Interest in Fuuko for her Unluck. His Negator ability "Undead" prevents him from dying, and he can uses his regenerative abilities to do a multitude of things, such as firing his finger like a bullet. He has a card in his head that, when removed, releases a second personality called Victor (ヴィクトル, Vikutōru). A running gag is his clothes being destroyed, as he can not regenerate them, but this stopped when he tamed the UMA Clothes.
Fuuko Izumo (出雲 風子, Izumo Fūko)
She was a suicidal girl at the start of the story, but was saved by Andy. When she was a kid, her negator ability awakened, and she accidently killed her parents, along with other people, in a plane crash. Her Negator ability, "Unluck" causes whoever touches her skin-to-skin to die after losing all of their luck.

The Union
Juiz (ジュイス, Juisu)
The leader and founder of the Union. Her Negator ability "Unjustice" allows her to control whoever she looks at by manipulating their "justice". She has tamed the UMA Move, which is the Union's main mode of transportation.
Shen (シェン)
A Chinese martial artist who is very perky. His Negator ability, "Untruth" allows him to make his opponents do the opposite of what they do, so long as he is looking at them and her likes them. He also carries a "Nyon-Kinko Staff" artifact which can extend and contract to reach space.
Tatania (タチアナ, Tachiana)
A young Russian girl who cares for her teammates greatly. She is in a spherical robot suit, as her Negator ability "Untouchable" creates a powerful barrier that crushes everything around it.
Top (トップ, Toppu)
A short-tempered 15-year old. His Negator ability, "Unstoppable" makes him move at incredible speeds, but he has to keep running or his speed will reset.
Isshin (一心)
A elderly man in a large suit of armor. Anything he forges is indestructible, thanks to his ability "Unbreakable".
Phil (フィル, Firu)
A boy with a body made of artifacts. His ability is "Unfeel", which negates his sense of touch.
Nico Vorgeil (ニコ゠フォーゲイル, Nico Fōgeiru)
The union's top inventor.
Chikara Shigeno (重野 力, Shigeno Chikara)
A recently awakened Negator. His ability is "Unmove" which negates the movement of whoever he looks at, as long as he himself is not moving.
Gina (ジーナ, Jīna)
A former member. She is an elderly woman who makes herself look younger who had feelings for Andy. Her ability "Unchange" allows her to negate change in the air creating barriers. She was killed by Andy so Fuuko could join, but she died peacefully after Andy kissed her and said she was beautiful, even after her true age was revealed.
Void (ボイド, Boido)
A former member. He has no qualms with murder, and believes the Negators who are not part of the Union are "UMA Freaks". His Negator ability, "Unavoidable" negated the ability to dodge. Andy killed him with his Parts bullets after he found out he can not negate his regeneration.

Under
Billy (ビリー, Birī)
Originally a member of the union, but later revealed to be a traitor. He has the ability to copy other Negator abilty's.
Rip (リップ, Rippu)
A former surgeon turned killer. His Negator ability, "Unrepair", negates the ability to heal. He also has the "Blade Runner" artifact, which creates blades when he kicks.
Latla (ラトラ, Ratora)
Rip's closest friend. She has a Negator ability that allows her to redirect attacks.
Feng (ファン, Fan)
A Chinese marital artist who always wears a hood. His ability increases the force of his attacks.
Creed (クリード, Kurīdo)
A Negator who specializes in weaponry. He Negator ability allows him to fire guns without reloading.
Bunny
A child-like member who wears a bunny costume.

Publication

Undead Unluck is written and illustrated by Yoshifumi Tozuka. A one-shot chapter was published in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump in January 2019.[2] The manga started its serialization in the 2020 8th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump on January 20, 2020.[3][2] Shueisha has compiled its chapters into individual tankōbon volumes. The first volume was published on April 3, 2020.[4] As of December 4, 2020, four volumes have been published.[5]

The manga is digitally serialized by Viz Media on its Shonen Jump website.[6] In October 2020, Viz Media announced the print and digital publication of the manga and the first volume will be published on May 4, 2021.[7][1]

Reception

In 2020, Undead Unluck won the 6th Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taishō Award, placed 1st out of the 50 nominees with 31,685 votes.[10][11][12] The manga ranked #14 on Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list of best manga of 2021 for male readers.[13]
