At these concerts, only songs that predated 1984 were played, some which had not been heard for years. The tracks, "An Ant", "Hello Mr. Minnow" and "Hopeless" had not previously been released and were available for purchase for the first time on The Special Garage Concerts Vol II. The album was also alternatively packaged & released with The Special Garage Concerts Vol I as part of a two-disc digipak.
The album has been praised by progressive rock critics; the Vol II rendition of A Game For Bertie's Party was singled out by Louder Sound's Prog Magazine as part of a list of Cardiacs best songs, praising the "magical and queasy dissonance" of its chord progression.[1]
