Futaro ends in the hospital because of the cold he got during the school camp. The doctor visiting him triggers some memories of a girl Futaro met during a school trip six years before. The quintuplets all pay him a visit, and Itsuki brings him a good luck charm very similar to the ones the girl from his memories had bought in Kyoto. After being released from the hospital, Futaro goes to the quintuplets' apartment, running into one of them who had just gotten out of the shower. Unable to recognize her as well as the zero-points tests she threw at him in the heat of the moment, Futaro challenges himself to recognize the five sisters with identical hairstyles, failing spectacularly. Itsuki wonders if Futaro is trying to find out the identity of the girl from his past, but he dismisses the idea of her being one of the quintuplets as the girl wouldn't have grown into such a poor student after promising to study hard.

With one week left before the final exams begin, Futaro stays all night preparing a huge stack of mock tests for the quintuplets to practice. The session goes downhill when Nino starts arguing with Miku and refuses to do the mock tests, causing Itsuki to step up and slap her, demanding that she apologizes to Futaro. Angered, Nino slaps her back and both of them decide to run away from home. The next day, since Ichika and Yotsuba have compromises of their own, Futaro and Miku need to search for Itsuki and Nino by themselves. They find Nino staying at a luxury hotel, and she refuses to go back, while Futaro finds out that Itsuki came to his home to stay after the spat with Nino. That night, Futaro and Itsuki go for a walk and Futaro learns that the quintuplets used to live in poverty just like him, as their mother had to raise them alone until she married their current father, and eventually died of illness. The next day, Futaro finds out to his dismay that Yotsuba once again is helping the track club for an upcoming marathon, and between that and Nino refusing to return home, Futaro is left wondering what he's going to do and if the quintuplets really need him in their lives. Suddenly, a face from Futaro's past appears before him, the girl he met five years ago in Kyoto.

After his encounter with the girl from his past, Futaro ended up falling into the lake and went again to Nino's hotel. The second quintuplet takes pity on him after seeing him depressed, let's him take a bath in her room. The two manage to get a mildly civil conversation with each other, until Nino asks what happened. A flashback shows Futaro's encounter with the girl from before, who forced him into taking a ride on a boat in the lake so they could talk to each other. The girl, who calls herself Rena, is aware that Futaro succeeded in becoming the top student of his class and his work as a tutor. Futaro tells her about the quintuplets and how he considers them a bunch of idiots. Rena seems happy that Futaro succeeded in the promise they made of becoming someone others need, but Futaro argues he hasn't changed at all. Rena states than maybe she should disappear so Futaro won't be dragged by the past anymore, and takes his photo with her, before saying they'll never meet again and saying goodbye to him. Nino is moved to tears by Futaro's story, and even tries to cheer him up saying there must be someone in the world for a guy like him. Futaro then accidentally discovers that Nino took the mock exams he made for her and has been studying since then, and she apologizes for the way she acted. Futaro accepts her apology and tries to convince her to do the same with Itsuki, but Nino refuses, arguing that she never expected her sister to do that. Futaro returns home and tries to convince Itsuki to go back and reconcile with Nino, but the youngest sister refuses as well, saying that she and Nino never seem to agree on anything and they've distanced themselves over the years. Futaro tries going to Nino's hotel the next day, while Ichika, Miku and Yotsuba continue to study by themselves at home, with Yotsuba getting a call from the track club. Futaro tries to convince Nino that his encounter with Rena made him realize that everyone needs to leave the past behind, but Nino still finds it hard to do, since she loved the time they used to have similar appearance and personality, but now she feels everyone else has moved on and she fears she's being left alone. She adds that she could probably move forward if she could see Kintaro one last time to say goodbye to him, so Futaro offers to let her see him again. Later, Futaro visits Nino disguised as Kintaro, conflicted as to whether he should tell her the truth or continue to play along. Ultimately, Nino calls Futaro to meet her at the hotel's cafeteria, where she thanks him for letting her see Kintaro again, only to reveal she knew all along it was him, and leave him asleep after drugging his drink. By the time he wakes up, Nino has left for another hotel. The next day, Futaro and Itsuki head for school and realize that Nino didn't come, so she's probably upset about what happened, but they have another issue in their hands: Yotsuba is still entangled with the track club with the final exams coming up and it won't be easy to get her out of it. The episode ends with Miku visiting Nino at the new hotel she's staying at, having donned her hairstyle and butterfly ribbons.

While Futaro, Ichika and Itsuki try to find a way to get Yotsuba out of the track club, Nino and Miku discuss what happened between the former and Futaro the day before. Nino comes to realize that, despite her insistence to cling to the past, she has changed in her own way just like the others, and it's okay for them to be different. When Itsuki fails to trick the track club captain, Nino arrives to do it in her stead, revealing that she cut her hair as away to say goodbye to her past and to Kintaro. Yotsuba finally decides to confront the track club by herself about what she wants, while Nino and Itsuki apologize and reconcile with each other. With the sisters finally reunited, the study sessions resume, and when the results don't turn out promising, Fuutarou offers to give them some cheating papers as a last resort. The day of the exams finally comes and the sisters do their best while Futaro borrows Itsuki's phone to call their father, trusting that they'll do well. The following day, Ebata shows up in their apartment to inform them that Futaro has quit his tutoring job and is banned from entering the building, so he will take over temporarily for him, much to the sisters' shock. During the session, the sisters decide to open up the cheating papers Futaro left for them, and discover they actually had a farewell message for them. They all realize they don't want to lose Futaro and ask Ebata for help. The Christmas season arrives and Futaro is working part-time for a bakery, and gets surprised when the quintuplets show up and request for a cake delivered at home. Much to his shock, it turns out they left their apartment and moved out to a more modest residence so he can continue being their tutor until the end, even tossing their key cards as proof of it. Trying to catch them, Futaro falls into the water and the sisters all have to jump in to save him from drowning, though Nino ends up paralyzed by the cold water and needs Futaro to rescue her instead. The sisters invite Futaro to come in to their new home and share the cake with them, which he accepts, finally deciding to cut ties with his own past and saying goodbye to Rena.
