History
In 2014 The Manc began by posting nostalgic pictures of Manchester. The Facebook page exploded in popularity and founder Ridgway was soon hired by UNILAD as their first employee (according to Prolific North[4]). Ridgway kept his viral page alive during his tenure at UNILAD, but in October 2018 the firm went into administration and were acquired by LADbible at which point Ridgway left the organisation to focus on The Manc's future.
Following a pivot towards news and away from Photographs and social media only, in 2019, The Manc saw it become the North West's largest socially interacted-with regional news platform online, beating Manchester's largest news outlet (the Manchester Evening News) and Wales Online with over 9.79M interactions from Facebook. It also made the Top 10 of National News Outlets in 2019.[5]
In July 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown began to lift across the UK for the Hospitality sector, Ridgway put the backing of the 1 Million social following of The Manc platform forward for a social cause.[6] His aim was to “bring the buzz back” into Manchester's Restaurants and Pubs by giving them the ability to tap into the audience with free advertising on the company’s social platforms and get free social media consulting.
