Meridian Junior College. TMJC was confirmed as one of the four Junior Colleges to be merged as announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) for the first time in April 2017.[1] It began operation on 7 January 2019.[2]
History
In 2017, MOE announced the mergers of various schools,[1] in view of the declining birth rate in Singapore, enrolments might fall to as low as 200 to 300 students within the next few years for some of the affected colleges.[3] Included in this exercise are also seven pairs of primary schools and three pairs of secondary schools. Tampines Junior College and Meridian Junior College were to merge as Tampines Meridian Junior College.
The new names of the junior colleges were formally made known in January 2018. They adopted a combination of the full names of both colleges, with the name of the older college coming first.[4] The new school compound will be at the site of Meridian Junior College.
The pioneering batch of students were welcomed by their new principal, Ms Pamela Yoong,[5] who invited them to build the new college together.[6]
TMJC is set to build upon the foundations of Tampines Junior College and Meridian Junior College which carry a rich heritage and culture. A wider range of educational experiences and enrichment programmes for students to realise their potential is made possible. The school continues the good practices of both colleges to develop students to be persons with strong self-awareness, a sound moral compass, and the relevant skills and knowledge to be future-ready, and contribute actively and meaningfully to the community and nation.[7]
College Identity
Students of TMJC are usually referred as "TMJCians" or "Tampines Meridians".
On 6 January 2020, the school officially release their new values, mission and vision after officially opening in the year 2019.[8]
