As of 2020, the city had an estimated population of 347,944 and a population density of 3,300 persons per km². The total area is 105.31 km².
The city was founded on January 1, 1943, and is almost directly between Kyoto and Osaka. Due to the convenience of being 13–15 minutes from Kyoto and Osaka by train respectively, the city has developed exponentially during the past recent 20 years. It is one of the biggest commuter towns in the area, with people commuting to Kyoto and Osaka. The city's official mascot character is Hanitan. It was designed after a soldier-shaped Haniwa excavated from Imashirozuka Kofun. During the Golden Week every year, the city holds Takatsuki Jazz Festival, two-day extravaganza of live jazz featuring over 300 acts, comprising over 3,000 artists, performing in 72 different locations in-and-around the central business disctrict.

Transportation
Railways
Takatsuki-shi is serviced by two train lines: JR (Japan Railway Company) and Hankyu. Many people prefer to ride on the JR line, due to the JR's cheaper fares and slightly more frequent service. When the JR Fukuchiyama Line crashed and caused 108 casualties in 2005, the number of people using JR dropped compared to Hankyu but has recovered since. Takatsuki is one of the larger suburban cities outlying central Osaka, so almost every train stops at this station.
The Sakaisuji Line terminates at the Takatsuki-shi Station, while it sometimes comes from the Kawaramachi Station.
