History

Mathematics was taught from the beginning at the Polytechnische Schule in München and the later Technische Hochschule München. Otto Hesse was the Department's first professor for calculus, analytical geometry and analytical mechanics. Over the years, several institutes for mathematics were formed.

In 1974, the Institute of Geometry was merged with the Institute of Mathematics to form the Department of Mathematics, and informatics, which had been part of the Institute of Mathematics, became a separate department.[3]

The Department of Mathematics shares a building with the Department of Informatics.

In the building, two massive parabolic slides run from the fourth floor to the ground floor. Their shape corresponds to the equation and is supposed to represent the "connection of science and art".[4]

The TUM Department of Mathematics has been rated as one of the top mathematics departments in Germany.[6][7] Globally, it is rated rated within the top 100.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings does not rank individual subjects, though in the physical sciences TUM is generally ranked 25th globally and 2nd nationally.[8]

In the national 2020 CHE University Ranking, the department is rated in the top group for the majority of criteria, including study organization, courses offered, infrastructure, and overall study situation.[9]

Notable people

Barbara Wohlmuth received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2012.[10] Herbert Spohn was awarded the Cantor medal in 2014,[11] the Max Planck Medal in 2017,[12] and the Boltzmann Medal in 2019.[13]

Past professors include Felix Klein, Alexander von Brill, Jacob Lüroth, Walther von Dyck, Ludwig Burmester, Heinrich Liebmann and Josef Lense.
