Stripchat is an international adult website and social network featuring free live-streamed webcam performances, often including nudity and sexual activity, in both traditional and virtual reality formats.[2][3] The site averages nearly 60 million visitors a month, according to SimilarWeb. [4] The site first launched in 2016,[5] and has since won numerous awards including "Cam Site of the Year" and "Cam Company of the Year" at the XBIZ Europa Awards. [6]

Stripchat and other cam sites saw significant growth in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the lockdowns in March 2020, visits to the site surged 25% in countries like the United States and United Kingdom.[7] Even after restrictions were lifted in most countries, traffic continued to rise, hitting a peak of nearly 120 million in August, up from about 60 million in January, a reverse of traditional traffic patterns. By November 2020 monthly visits to the site were more than double what they had been a year earlier. In the same period, the number of models appearing on the site increased by 300,000. [8] In an interview with BBC News, a representative said that many traditional adult performers had moved to camming due to the lack of production on traditionally porn sets, as had other types of sex workers and amateurs. Stripchat attempted to off-set increased competition from new performers coming onto the site by providing free tokens for new users. [9][10]

Many of the new users to the site are the result of changing work patterns. According to data released by the company in June 2020, 75% of visitors to the site came between the hours of 10AM and 6PM.[11]

Technology

Stripchat has developed tools to allow cam models to stream from their mobile phones, [12] and one Stripchat executive proposed the site would soon consider hiring sex robots, suggesting “robotic sex is the future of sex.” [13]

In August 2020, Stripchat debuted a new AI video recognition technology using a convolutional neural network which it claimed could identify and tag specific sex acts from live-streamed videos with 92% accuracy. The company dubbed the program "Anal-ytics" since it was first used to identify models engaging in anal play.[14]

Sexuality Resource Center

In February 2020, Stripchat announced the launch of a Sexuality Resource Center, featuring videos of therapists answering questions about sex and relationship issues.[15] The site began hosting live stream sessions with licensed therapists from the Sexual Health Alliance in July 2019 after a study of users showed that many felt anxiety about their cam viewing.[16][17][18]

Superdome Bid

After the New Orleans Saints announced they were seeking a new naming rights partner for the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Stripchat offered $15M to the franchise in hopes of securing the title of 'Stripchat Superdome' for several years. [19] Mercedes-Benz had previously paid a reported $50-60M for a period of 10 years. The Saints did not officially respond to the offer, but adoption was seen as unlikely since team owner Gayle Benson is a devout Catholic.[20]

Small Business Advertising

In June 2020, following the extended shutdown of many businesses due to the COVID pandemic, Stripchat offered small businesses free advertising on the platform.[21] The company asked small businesses to send in branded clothing for it to send to its most popular models. Business who applied and were accepted were Offensive Crayons, an "r-rated" art supply set; Lagneia, an LA-based make-up artist; JPiccari Photo, an LA-based photographer; and RXSleeve, a device for treating erectile dysfunction. Webcam models including Alexa Creed, KirstieVegas, IrisBlues, Aelis and Anna Harper X wore the clothing free of charge and a bot provided links to the business during the chat.[22][23]

Mission Impossible 7

When Tom Cruise's rant about safety protocols on the set of Mission: Impossible 7[24] prompted five crew members to quit the shoot, Stripchat Vice President Max Bennett offered them work on a previously unannounced original series following the lives of cam girls.[25]
