String Quartet No. 3 (Hill)

String Quartet No. 3 in A minor "The Carnival", Stiles 1.2.3.3 SQ3,[1] was composed by Alfred Hill in 1912,[2] when he was playing second violin in Cyril Monk's Austral String Quartet.[3] Its original title was The Carnival, or Student in Italy.[4][5] The manuscript score is preserved in the National Library of Australia.[5] In 1955 Hill expanded it to a symphony, thus creating his Symphony No. 5.[3][4] The quartet's average duration is 21-22 minutes.

Structure

The quartet is in four movements:[6]

I. In the streets. Allegro con fuoco (A minor)
II. Andantino (D major)
III. Scherzo (A major)
IV. Finale. Allegro moderato (A minor)

Originally all the four movements had titles. According to Allan Stiles, these were:[1]

I. In the streets — A Merry march
II. In the studio — Serious moods
III. In the country — The dances on the green
IV. Finale — The Carnival

In the manuscript score held in the National Library of Australia the titles differ from those above:[5]

III. Dancing on the green
IV. Carnival — Procession of priests — The street singer
