Silviu Lung

Silviu Lung (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈsilvju luŋɡ]; born 9 September 1956) is a retired Romanian football goalkeeper and current manager.

Playing career

Club career

He was born in Sânmiclăuş, Satu Mare and debuted in Divizia A with Universitatea Craiova in 1974. He played fourteen seasons with Universitatea, winning two league titles. In 1984, Lung was nominated for the Ballon d'Or.[1][2] In 1988, he joined Steaua Bucureşti and won another league title in the first season.[3] He played in the 1988/89 European Cup Final against AC Milan, when Steaua lost 4–0.[4] He also played abroad, in Spanish team CD Logroñés.[3] He returned to Universitatea in 1992/93 and retired in 1994.[3]

International career

Lung was capped 76 times for Romania between 1979 and 1993, and represented his country at Euro 1984 and the 1990 FIFA World Cup, where he was captain in all four matches.[5]

Coaching career

After retirement he began his coach career and for over 20 years was the assistant coach or goalkeeping coach for clubs like: FCU Craiova, Național București, Nagoya Grampus, Pandurii Târgu Jiu, Astra Ploiești, CFR Cluj, Universitatea Craiova or Concordia Chiajna. Between 1995 and 1997 he was the head coach of Minerul Motru and earlier in 1994, of Olympique de Casablanca, these were his only jobs as a head coach, until December 2017, when he was announced as the new head coach of Liga III side, CSO Filiași.[6][7]

Personal life

Silviu Lung has two son goalkeepers: Tiberiu, who is currently a goalkeeping coach and last time played for Mpumalanga Black Aces in the Premier Soccer League, having also played for FCU Craiova or Steaua București and Silviu Jr., who plays for Turkish side Kayserispor.[8] Both of them have played for Romania at senior level. In January 2014, Silviu Lung was involved in a car accident which killed the driver of the other vehicle. Silviu was hospitalized with moderate injuries.
