Samaritan is an upcoming American superhero thriller film directed by Julius Avery, and starring Sylvester Stallone and Javon "Wanna" Walton. With a script by Bragi F. Schut, the project has been described as a dark, new take on superhero movies.

Samaritan is scheduled to be released on June 4, 2021 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Plot

A young boy comes to the realization that a famed superhero, who was thought to have gone missing after an epic battle twenty years ago, may in fact still be around.

Development

In February 2019, MGM acquired a script by Bragi F. Schut titled Samaritan, and was announced to co-produce the film with Balboa Productions.[1] In September 2019, Julius Avery joined the production as director.[2]

Casting

In February 2019, Sylvester Stallone was announced to star as the titular role, in addition to his role as producer. In February 2020, Martin Starr, Moisés Arias, Dascha Polanco, Pilou Asbæk, Javon "Wanna" Walton, Jared Odrick, and Michael Aaron Milligan had join the cast in supporting roles.[3][4] In March 2020, Natacha Karam joined the cast of the film.[5]

Filming

In September 2019, filming was scheduled for a 2020 start date in Atlanta.[2][6] Filming was confirmed to have commenced by February 26, 2020.[7] On March 14, the production went on hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[8] By October 8, 2020, filming had resumed.[9]

Release

Samaritan is scheduled to be released on June 4, 2021.[10] It was previously scheduled to be released on December 11, 2020 and November 20, 2020.[11]
