Sagesse SC (football)

Sagesse Sports Club, or Hekmeh Club Beirut (Arabic: نادي الحكمة بيروت‎, lit. 'Wisdom Club Beirut') in Arabic, is a football club based in Achrafieh, a district in Beirut, Lebanon, that competes in the Lebanese Second Division.[2]

The club was founded in 1943 under the patronage of Father Boulos Kik, supported by Monseigneur Jean Maroun. Although trophyless, Sagesse came second twice in a row in the Lebanese Premier League, in 2001 and 2002, and were finalists in both the Lebanese FA Cup, in 2006, and the Lebanese Federation Cup, in 2004. The club is mostly known for its basketball program.[3]

History

Sagesse were formed in 1942 by Father Boulos Al Kik, general director of the Sagesse Institute.[4] The club received their official license on 14 October 1943.[4] Sagesse took part in the Lebanese Premier League in 1943–44, but were relegated to the Second Division in 1945, before winning it in 1948 to gain back promotion to the Premier League. After two years they were relegated back again to the Second Division in 1950. After becoming champions of the Second Division yet again in 1956, the club returned to the Premier League and played in the top League until 1991.

During most of that period Lebanese football was at its peak, and Sagesse played friendlies against many notable clubs from around the world. In 2006 Sagesse reached the final of the Lebanese FA Cup, but lost against the cup holder Ansar 1–3.[5]
