History and boundaries
The Constituency Commission proposed in its 2012 report that at the following general election a new constituency called Roscommon–Galway be created.[1] The report proposed changes to the constituencies of Ireland so as to reduce the total number of TDs from 166 to 158.[2]
It was established by the Electoral (Amendment) (Dáil Constituencies) Act 2013.[3] The constituency incorporates all of County Roscommon from the existing Roscommon–South Leitrim constituency, and thirty three electoral divisions from the Galway East constituency.
The Electoral (Amendment) (Dáil Constituencies) Act 2017 defines the constituency as:[4]
- "The county of Roscommon, except the part which is comprised in the constituency of Sligo–Leitrim;
- and the county of Galway except the part thereof which is comprised in the constituencies of Galway East and Galway West.
