Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014

Romania participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark.[1] The Romanian entry was selected through Selecția Națională 2014, a national final organised by the Romanian broadcaster Televiziunea Română (TVR). Paula Seling and Ovi represented Romania with the song "Miracle", which qualified from the second semi-final to compete in the final. Romania placed 12th in the final, scoring 72 points.

Selecția Națională 2014

Selecția Națională 2014 was the national final organised by TVR in order to select Romania's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. The winner of the national final was determined through the 50/50 combination of votes from a jury panel and a public televote. The competition was televised on TVR1, TVR HD, TVRi as well as online via the broadcaster's streaming service TVR+ and the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.

Competing entries

TVR opened a submission period for artists and composers to submit their entries between 15 January 2014 and 14 February 2014. The broadcaster received 150 submissions after the submission deadline passed.[2] An expert committee reviewed the received submissions and twelve entries were selected for the national final. The competing entries were announced on 20 February 2014.[3] Among the competing artists were Paula Seling & Ovi, who previously represented Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010.[4][5][6]

Final

The national final took place on 1 March 2014 at the Sică Alexandrescu Drama Theatre in Brașov, hosted by Nicolle Stănese.[7] Twelve songs competed and the winner, "Miracle" performed by Paula Seling & Ovi, was determined by the 50/50 combination of the votes from a five-member jury panel and public televoting. Each member of the jury voted by assigning scores from 1–8, 10 and 12 points to their preferred songs. The summation of the jury points had produced an overall ranking that was converted to 1–8, 10 and 12 points. The members of the jury were jury president Madalin Voicu (musician, politician), Alexandra Cepraga (music director), Nico (singer, represented Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008), Bobby Stoica (composer, producer) and Nancy Brandes (conductor, lyricist, actress).[8] The public had the opportunity to submit their vote during a voting window and the top ten songs as ranked by the televote received 1–8, 10 and 12 points. In addition to the performances of the competing entries, the interval acts featured performances by Stela Popescu, Corina Chiriac, Proconsul and Luminiţa Dobrescu. The national final also featured a tribute to the 46th anniversary of the now discontinued Golden Stag Festival, held annually in Braşov.[9]

During the semi-final allocation draw on 20 January 2014 at the Copenhagen City Hall, Romania was drawn to compete in the second half of the second semi-final on 8 May 2014. Romania would have to place in the top ten of the second semi-final in order to qualify to compete in the final on 10 May 2014.[10] In the second semi-final, the producers of the show decided that Romania would close the semi-final and perform 15th, following Slovenia.[11] Romania qualified from the second semi-final, placing 2nd in the field of 15 songs with 125 points, and competed in the final on 10 May 2014. During the winner's press conference for the second semi-final qualifiers, Romania was allocated to compete in the first half of the final.[12] In the final, the producers of the show decided that Romania would perform 6th, following Norway and preceding Armenia.[13] Romania ultimately placed 12th in the final, scoring 72 points.[14]

On stage, Paula Seling and Ovi were joined by four backing vocalists. The performance featured a large circular keyboard played by Ovi and a holographic effect that superimposed Paula Seling on the screen at one end of the stage before she immediately appears on the other side. The LED screens projected silhouettes of butterflies and whirling colour streams.[15]

In Romania, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast on TVR1, TVRi and TVR HD with commentary by Bogdan Stănescu.[16] The Romanian spokesperson revealing the result of the Romanian vote in the final was Sonia Argint Ionescu.[17]
