Paul Dempsey (bishop)

Paul Dempsey (born 20 April 1971) is an Irish prelate, the current bishop of Achonry.[1] Fr Dempsey was born in Carlow Town in 1971, the youngest in his family, having one brother and two sisters. He was brought up in Athy, Co. Kildare. He trained for the priesthood in St. Patrick's, Carlow College, and was ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow, by Bishop Laurence Ryan in 1997. He also studied in All Hallows College, Dublin and in the Milltown Institute in Dublin, completing a Masters in Theology.[2] He has written in the Leinster Leader, and presented a show on Kildare FM.[3]

Fr. Dempsey has served as a curate in Clane, and in the parish cluster of Naas, Sallins and Two-Mile-House, before being appointed to Newbridge. He was appointed Bishop of Achonry in January 2020.[4] His episcopal ordination was scheduled for April 2020 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, finally taking place on 30 August 2020.[5]
