Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism

The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT; Malay: Kementerian Sumber-Sumber Utama dan Pelancongan) is a ministry in the Government of Brunei which oversees the development of agricultural and fishing industries, forestry management as well as tourism. The current Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism is Ali bin Apong, who has been appointed since 2015 and retained office during the 2018 cabinet reshuffle.[1]

Background

The ministry was previously known as the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR; Malay: Kementerian Perindustrian dan Sumber-Sumber Utama) until the renaming to its present name to reflect functional restructuring, in which oversight for the petroleum and non-primary industries has been transferred, at that time to Prime Minister's Office. It is also to reflect the emphasis on the development of tourism industry.[2]

The ministry manages the following departments:

  • Agriculture and Agrifood Department (Jabatan Pertanian dan Agrimakanan)
  • Department of Fisheries (Jabatan Perikanan)
  • Forestry Department (Jabatan Perhutanan)
  • Tourism Development Department (Jabatan Kemajuan Pelancongan)

Budget

The budget for the ministry in the current fiscal year (2018–19) is B$54 million (US$39 million as of December 2018).[3][4] It has the smallest budget allocation among the ministries for that year.
