Biography

McGovern is a native of the Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, and grew up in a large Catholic family in which Catholic education was emphasized.[1] He is a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep and Loyola University where he earned a bachelor's degree in sacred theology, studied law at DePaul University College of Law until entering the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois in 1990.[1] On May 21, 1994, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin ordained Father Michael McGovern to the priesthood in Holy Name Cathedral. He served as an associate pastor at Queen of the Universe Parish (1995-1998), St. Mary in Lake Forest (1998-1999), and St. Juliana in Chicago (2003-2004). He then served as pastor of the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest (2004-2016), and St. Raphael the Archangel Parish in Old Mill Creek (2016-2020). He was Dean of Deanery 1-A (2007-2020), and was later named as the interim Vicar of the Archdiocese of Chicago in February 2020.[2][3][4]
