Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a front-engine, front- or four-wheel drive five-door subcompact luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was unveiled by the German manufacturer Daimler AG on 10 June 2019 in Park City, Utah.[3] It was previously unveiled as a concept car to the public at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2019.[4] The GLB is positioned between the GLA-Class crossover and the larger GLC-Class SUV in size. The launch date for taking orders began in July 2019.[5] The production commenced at the end of 2019 for the 2020 model year.[6] It went on sale in November 2019 in Mexico,[7] and was released in July 2020 for Thailand.[8]

The X247 GLB-Class uses the same front-wheel-drive MFA2 platform as the W177 A-Class and the H247 GLA-Class, but the wheelbase is 10 cm longer to give it extra practicality. The result is that at 4.63 m (182.3 in), it is only 22 mm (0.9 in) shorter than a X253 GLC-Class.[5] Mechanically, it has standard all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed dual clutch automatic transmission,[9] and shares its engine lineup with the A-Class. Despite being similarly sized to the X253 GLC, the X247 GLB is able to have three-row seating due to better space distribution.[10]

The GLB has a square, angular style inspired by the larger X167 GLS-Class and the former boxy shaped X204 GLK-Class.[11][12][13] It features a MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension with optional adaptive damping.[14] Inside, the widescreen cockpit and the latest version of the MBUX interface is featured.[15]

The Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4MATIC was announced on 28 August 2019 in time for the 2019 IAA Frankfurt Auto Show. The GLB 35 4MATIC is the first of the 35-series models to have an eight-speed automatic gearbox; other 35-series models (A 35 4MATIC and CLA 35 4MATIC) continue with seven-speed automatic gearboxes.[16] Fitted to GLB 35 4MATIC, the AMG-specific Panamericana Grille is used on the 35-series model for the first time.[17]

The X247 GLB-Class shares its proportions with the W247 B-Class, while the dynamics will be based on the H247 GLA-Class. It is available with 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines only, while a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric version, presumably called the EQB, will be available later.

Engines

At launch, the GLB-Class came with two petrol and two diesel engines. All of them are fitted with automatic transmissions only, while 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is either available or standard with the 2-liter engines, only. Available as of 2020, the 2.0 L petrol engine in the GLB 35 is tuned to produce 225 kW (306 PS; 302 bhp) and 400 N⋅m (295 lbf⋅ft) of torque. A plug-in hybrid system found in A250e could be fitted to GLB at later date.

Diesel engines and the smaller petrol engine were eschewed for the US market, leaving only the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo of the GLB 250 for the debut.[18]
