Mark Barr (triathlete)

Mark Barr is an American paratriathlon competitor. In 2018, he won his first world title in the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in the men's PTS2 division. That year he was awarded the USA Triathlon's Elite Paratriathlete of the Year award.[1] In 2019, he won the Best Male Athlete with a Disability ESPY Award.[2][3]

Career

Athletics

When Barr was 14 years old, he had his leg amputated after surviving osteosarcoma. During the process, he met a nurse who was an amputee athlete who encouraged him to become one as well.[4] Eventually, Barr went back to the water and started swimming again, graduating from Davis High in 2004[5] and swimming Division I at Cal Poly University. He competed in two Paralympics at Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 in swimming and at the 2016 Games in the triathlon.[6] He competed in his first triathlon in 2009[7] He became a Paratriathlon World Champion.[8]

Nursing

Barr received his undergraduate degree in nutrition from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and his nursing degree from Drexel University.[9] Barr is a registered nurse and works as an ICU trauma nurse at Ben Taub Hospital in Texas.[7]
