Mario Duplantier

Mario François Duplantier (born 19 June 1981 in Bayonne, France) is a French musician and artist best known as the drummer for progressive death metal band Gojira.[1]

Early life

Duplantier grew up in Ondres, South-West France near from the Basque country in a family where arts played a significant role.[2]

Career

In 1993, Duplantier, then aged twelve, started his first death / thrash metal band,[3] named Putride.[4] He was known for his maturity in the band.[4] His brother, Joe Duplantier, credited him for his natural skills, "[t]hey were 10 times better than [P4] my band at the time. The first time he touched the drums, he was very, very good. He was better than the drummer I had at the time".[5] Mario Duplantier commented: "In the rehearsal room, I was already a real perfectionist tyrant at 13. I wanted everything to be perfect".[3]

In 1996, Duplantier and his brother, Joe Duplantier, formed Godzilla, which became Gojira in 2001.[5]

Duplantier is known for his technical and rhythmic heavy precision drumming with extended double-bass blasts, mid-tempo rock power grooves, precision tom fills, jazzy drum breaks, and blast beats. Gojira's live show often features his drum solos as part of the set. Occasionally, Mario plays guitar during live shows when he and his brother, Joe, switch places.[6]

He was crowned as the best drummer of modern metal by MetalSucks in April 2012.[7] He was voted Best Drummer at the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards.[8]

Art

Duplantier developed his drawing, painting, and music skills in an environment of freedom and creativity.[2] In June 2010, Mario Duplantier, admirer of Hieronymus Bosch, presented a one-night-only presentation of his art show, named "Cocktail à Base De Goudron" ("Tar Base Cocktail"), held at L'Atabal, in Biarritz, France.[9] In December 2010, he made a second exhibition, entitled "Cocktail à Base De Goudron edition 2", at the Rock School Barbey in Bordeaux, France.[9] He said that "[t]hese are a bit gloomy paintings... both quirky and mystical, a bit in the spirit of Gojira's music".[9] Most of the paintings are done on the road between two concerts in America, he said that it was "a way of staying creative during the many dead times between dates, sound settings, etc".[9]
