Lucy Brenton

Lucy Marcelle Brenton (born September 14, 1971) is an American politician and the current Secretary of the Hamilton County Libertarian Party.[1] She has run for United States Senate in Indiana twice, in 2016 and most recently in 2018.

Personal life

Brenton grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from Northwest High School in 1989. She later attended IUPUI to study the French language and economics.[2] She currently resides in Fishers, Indiana and has ten children with her husband Dorn.[3]

Political career

Brenton began her political career running for City-County Council of Indianapolis in 1995, running as a Libertarian. She lost, but managed a record percentage of the vote for a Libertarian candidate at the time.[4] It wasn't until 2016 that she decided to run for office again, this time for United States Senate, against Republican Todd Young and Democrat Evan Bayh. She managed to finish with 5.5 percent of the vote in the general election.[5] She ran for U.S. Senate in Indiana again in 2018, against incumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly and Republican Mike Braun, faring a little worse, finishing with 3.9 percent of the vote.[6]

2018 U.S. Senate ads controversy

On November 3, 2018, President Donald Trump called out Democratic U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly for "trying to steal" the election, saying, "Rumor has it that Senator Joe Donnelly of Indiana is paying for Facebook ads for his so-called opponent on the libertarian ticket. Donnelly is trying to steal the election? Isn’t that what Russia did!?"[7][8] The ad in question touts Lucy Brenton as a "anti-tax conservative", urging Hoosier rightists to "vote your values".[9]

Indiana Democratic Party chairman John Zody responded to the President's remarks, confirming the Indiana Democrats' responsibility for the ad, saying, "The ads highlighting how Lucy Brenton is the true conservative in the Indiana Senate race are paid for by the Indiana Democratic Party. They are perfectly legal, factual, and accurately represent Lucy Brenton's anti-tax record. These ads draw attention to Rep. Braun’s record of voting to raise taxes on Hoosiers dozens of times as a State Representative while writing legislation to give himself tax breaks."[7][10]

Political positions

Abortion

Brenton personally considers herself pro-life, but insists the federal government should neither fund nor legislate abortions.[11]

Hemp and marijuana

Brenton has called for cannabis to be removed as a Schedule I narcotic, saying it should be legalized for both medical and recreational purposes.[12]

Taxes

Brenton has voiced support for a 0% corporate income tax, which she believes would bring companies that have moved overseas back to the United States.[4]
