List of first women mayors in the United States
The first woman to serve as mayor in the United States, and in the world, is believed to be Susanna Madora Salter of the United States, who served as mayor of Argonia, Kansas, in 1887. However, the first woman recorded winning a mayoral election was Nancy Smith in 1862, who declined to be sworn in as mayor of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Doris A. Davis was the first woman and first African American woman elected mayor in the City of Compton in 1973.
Mary Parham-Copelan was the first African-American woman to be elected to the office of Mayor for the City of Milledgeville, Georgia, 2017. This race was historic because there has never been an elected female to the office Mayor throughout the city's 205-year history.
