Lil Mosey

Lathan Moses Stanley Echols (born January 25, 2002), known professionally as Lil Mosey, is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. He rose to fame in late 2017 with the release of his single "Pull Up". Mosey's debut studio album Northsbest (2018) included his first Billboard Hot 100 charting single, "Noticed". His second studio album, Certified Hitmaker (2019), peaked at number 12 on the US Billboard 200. In 2020, Mosey released the highest-charting single of his career, "Blueberry Faygo", which peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Early life

Lathan Moses Stanley Echols was born on January 25, 2002 in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, to a white mother and a half-Puerto Rican, half Black father.[7][8] He was raised by his mother in the north side of Seattle. He began rapping in his early teens and started his music career in the eighth grade. Echols first attended Mountlake Terrace High School, then transferred to Shorecrest High School in the tenth grade. He later dropped out of school following the success of his song "Pull Up", and went on to pursue his career, heading to Los Angeles to record.[7][8]

Career

2016-2018: Beginnings, record deal, and Northsbest

Echols began his musical career in 2016 at the age of 15. He derived his stage name "Lil Mosey" from his middle name "Moses", and began gaining attention after releasing his debut single "Off White" on SoundCloud on August 5. On November 13, Mosey competed at the Coast 2 Coast Live Seattle All Ages Edition in which he was placed fourth. On December 9, Mosey released his commercial single "So Bad" as the lead single to his debut mixtape NorthsBest, which was released on April 7, 2017. On December 7, he released the single "Pull Up" which became his breakthrough hit.

In 2018, Mosey opened for Juice WRLD during his WRLD Domination tour before signing to Interscope Records. On March 14, Mosey released the lead single "Boof Pack" to his then upcoming debut studio album. On October 19, 2018, Mosey released his debut studio album Northsbest, named after his 2017 mixtape, which was followed by a teaser that was released 4 days prior. The album only features BlocBoy JB and mainly features production from his frequent producer Royce David. An extended version of Northsbest, was released hours later featuring one new song "Bust Down Cartier".

2019-2020: Certified Hitmaker, and collaborations

On June 7, 2019, Mosey released "G Walk" featuring Chris Brown as the lead single to his upcoming second studio album. On September 17, he released "Stuck in a Dream" featuring Gunna, which was accompanied by a music video directed by Michael Garcia that premiered the following day on YouTube. "Stuck in a Dream" peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100. On November 5, Mosey released the album's final single "Live This Wild" which was accompanied by a music video that premiered on November 13 also directed by Garcia and guest starring the Mula Gang twins. On October 20, Mosey released the first teaser to his second studio album Certified Hitmaker which showcases an introduction to an artificial intelligence known as AVA who guides Mosey on his mission on Earth. On October 29, an official album trailer was released which also announced his third upcoming studio album The Land of Make Believe.

Certified Hitmaker was eventually released on February 6, 2020 containing features from Gunna, Trippie Redd, AJ Tracey, and Chris Brown. The following day, Mosey released “Blueberry Faygo” which was accompanied by a music video starring social media celebrity Addison Rae. A deluxe edition of the album titled Certified Hitmaker (AVA Leak) was released on August 14, which includes 5 new songs: "Top Gone” featuring Lunay, "Back At It" featuring Lil Baby, "Bands out tha Roof", "My Dues", and "Focus on Me". “Blueberry Faygo” was also featured on the deluxe. The deluxe features a story that AVA leaked the extra tracks to satisfy Mosey fans until the release of upcoming second mixtape titled Universal, which was scheduled for a late 2020 release date but was missed.

Throughout the rest of 2020, Mosey became a regular guest feature on Internet Money's B4 The Storm on the song "Lost Me" also featuring Lil Skies and Iann Dior, The Kid LAROI's F*ck Love mixtape on the song "Wrong" which was accompanied by a music video directed by Logan Paul which Mosey also starred in, Trippie Redd's third studio album Pegasus on the song "No Honorable Mentions" also featuring Quavo of the Migos, French Montana's fifth instalment of his CokeBoys series on the song "How We Doin It", and DJ Scheme's debut studio album FAMILY on the song "Bussin' Out" also featuring Ty Dolla $ign. To end the year, he released the lead single to Universal "Jumpin Out The Face" on November 13 which was accompanied by a music video.

2021-present: Universal, and upcoming third studio album

Universal will serve as a continuation of a storyline Mosey began with Northsbest which showcased Mosey leaving his homeworld to Earth for an unknown mission in which he is guided by AVA, who was introduced in Certified Hitmaker, and would lead to his upcoming third studio album which it's title was revealed to be The Land of Make Believe at the end of the Certified Hitmaker album. Back in December 2020, a supposed leaked tracklist of Universal was revealed and is expected to contain features from Tyga, YG, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and Rich The Kid.

On January 25, 2021, Mosey released Universal's second single "Holy Water", which was accompanied by a music video. On February 5, Mosey was featured on Smokepurpp’s recent single “We Outside” which was also accompanied by a music video.

After stealing his brothers iPod, he discovered rappers such as Meek Mill, and Drake from which he became inspired by.

Musical style

Lil Mosey is known for his melodic flow and lyrics that are tailored to his life.[4] When asked if the term "mumble rap" applies to him in an interview with Complex, Lil Mosey says "I wouldn’t consider myself a mumble rapper, because I don’t know what that is. But when I talk, I mumble."[9] Although Lil Mosey does not consider his sound to be similar to Meek Mill's, he does consider the rapper an influence as in an interview with XXL Magazine, he describes how he would always listen to Meek Mill's song "Dreams and Nightmares" when he was younger.[10] When asked in the same interview about what comparisons he has drawn, Mosey responded "Music-wise, they be comparing me to Drake".[10]

Live performances

Lil Mosey has toured with rappers Smooky MarGielaa, Lil Tjay, Polo G and Smokepurpp.[9] In 2018, Lil Mosey was on tour with Juice Wrld and YBN Cordae, serving as the opening act for Juice Wrld's WRLD Domination Tour.[4] He has also received a co-sign from Lil Xan, and he says his first real live performance as an established artist came when Lil Xan brought him on stage during his concert in Seattle.[9] The rapper also performed at Rolling Loud in 2018. Lil Mosey has also toured with Sauve and Bandkidjay. He has given free performances, such as one in Seattle for a baby toy drive. He toured Europe, Canada and the US on the Certified Hitmaker Tour.
