Kanpur Metro

Kanpur Metro is a rail-based mass transit system which is under construction for the city of Kanpur, India, and extendable to the Kanpur metropolitan area. The feasibility study for the project was done by RITES in June 2015 . The study was prepared to control traffic woes and congestion, which are hampering the growth, development, and prosperity of the city area. The tenders were floated for the priority section of corridor-1 of phase-1 between IIT to Motijheel. AFCONS Infra has been awarded the tender. Elevated viaduct work has begun, more than half of total pillars have been constructed and work of all the stations till motijheel have started . The pier caps and U girders are being erected and construction work is going in full swing. The priority section of corridor-1 is expected to be operational from December 2021 which will become the fastest built and commissioned metro system in the world. On 28 February 2019, the Central government approved the metro project for Kanpur at an estimated cost of ₹11,076.48 crores and a five-year time limit.[2][3] The European Investment Bank has proposed to provide a €650 million loan for the project.[4]

In Phase 1, 22 metro stations will be built on first corridor (Red Line) from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta and 8 metro stations will be built on second corridor (Blue Line) from Agriculture University to Barra-8.[5]

The cost of construction is estimated at ₹11,076.48 crores for two lines in Phase I. [2]

  • Nov 2015: Detailed project report prepared by LMRC and RITES is submitted to the state government.[7]
  • Feb 2016: State Government is planning to lay the foundation stone of Kanpur Metro in March 2016 after state cabinet approval.[8]

  • September 2017: Civil engineering work comes to a halt. Central Govt has asked Kanpur Metro to rework the detailed project report and finances and asked to make it a public-private partnership model project.[19]
  • October 2017: Work on preparing new detailed project report started. The new report is to take approximately three months.[20]
  • January 2018: Uttar Pradesh government cabinet decides to build metro in Kanpur, Agra, and Meerut.[21]
  • Feb 2018: Work started in the metro yard. Tenders floated and which are to be opened in March 2018.[22]
  • Apr 2018: Center yet to approve of the Kanpur Metro project.[23]
  • Jun 2018: Tendering done but not awarded as a project with a new detailed project report is yet not approved by the central government.[24]

  • 24 July 2020: UPMRC places a double T girder on IIT KANPUR METRO STATION.

  • 18 October 2020: 100th U-girder erected. A total of 638 U-girders are to be placed for the priority corridor between IIT Kanpur & Motijheel. [37]
  • 29 January 2021: 400 piers out of 513 piers for the priority corridor constructed. 332 T-girders constructed out of total number of 434 T-girders to be constructed for priority corridor. [38]
