Johann V of Nassau-Vianden-Dietz

Johann V of Nassau-Vianden-Dietz (Breda, 9 November 1455 – Dillenburg, 30 July 1516) was count of Nassau (in Siegen, Dillenburg, Hadamar and Herborn), Vianden and Diez, and Lord of Breda. He was the paternal grandfather of William the Silent.

Life

Johann V was born in 1455 in Breda, the son of Jan IV of Nassau (1410–1475), and his wife Maria of Loon-Heinsberg.

In 1472 a treaty was conducted with his brother Engelbert II of Nassau in which he was granted the Nassau territory and his brother received the possessions in the Netherlands and left of the Rhine.[1]

In 1504 after the death of his brother Engelbrecht II of Nassau in Breda without an heir, Johann's eldest son Henry III of Nassau-Breda succeeded him.

In 1504 and 1505 Johann V served as stadtholder of Guelders and Zutphen.

Family

Johann V had married in 1482 to Elisabeth of Hesse-Marburg, a daughter of Henry III, Landgrave of Upper Hesse and his wife Anna of Katzenelnbogen.[2] They had 6 children:

Count Johann V was buried at Siegen. His Dutch possessions went to his eldest son Henry, his German possessions to his other son William.
