International League Most Valuable Pitcher Award

The International League Most Valuable Pitcher Award is an annual award given to the best pitcher in Minor League Baseball's International League. Managers from the 14 International League teams vote for the winner of the award, which is then combined with 14 votes from various general managers, broadcasters, and media representatives around the league to determine a winner.[1] From 1932 to 1952, IL pitchers were eligible to win the Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) as no award was designated for pitchers. A total of 4 pitchers have won the MVP Award. In 1953, Bob Trice of the Ottawa A's won the first International League Most Valuable Pitcher Award.

One International League Most Valuable Pitcher Award winner, Tommy Lasorda, has gone on to be inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.[2] Seven players each from the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings have been selected for the Most Valuable Pitcher Award, more than any other teams in the league, followed by the Columbus Clippers, Tidewater/Norfolk Tides, and Syracuse Chiefs/SkyChiefs (6); the Indianapolis Indians and Toronto Maple Leafs (5); the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (4); the Charlotte Knights and Columbus Jets (3); the Durham Bulls, Richmond Braves, Richmond Virginians, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, and Toledo Mud Hens (2); and the Charleston Charlies, Gwinnett Braves, Jacksonville Suns, Louisville Bats, Montreal Royals, and Ottawa A's (1).

Eleven players from the New York Yankees Major League Baseball (MLB) organization have won the Most Valuable Pitcher Award, more than any other, followed by the Boston Red Sox organization (8); the Pittsburgh Pirates organization (7); the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies organizations (6); the Baltimore Orioles organization (5); the Chicago White Sox organization (4); the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays organizations (3); the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, and Tampa Bay Rays organizations (2); and the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals organizations (1). Three award winners were not members of any MLB organization.

Winners
Mel Stottlemyre, who won in 1964, was later selected to play in the MLB All-Star Game five times.[3]
Dennis Martínez, the 1976 winner, pitched a perfect game in 1991.[4]
Mike Mussina, who won in 1991, was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.[5]
Jeremy Hellickson, who won in 2010, also won the 2011 American League Rookie of the Year Award.[6]
