History

Hitchcock was named for the local Hitchcock family, including William Hitchcock, who established the first store in the community.[3]

A post office was established at Hitchcock in 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1900.[4]

The town of Hitchcock is shown on many early maps as "Oxonia", and was a station along the Monon Railroad. Hitchcock had a one-room schoolhouse, in use up to the 1950s. A major cultural center of the community was the Mt. Zion Methodist Church,[5] now defunct (supplanted by nearby New Hope Methodist Church in 1970), although the Mt. Zion Methodist Church cemetery is still active.
