It was previously used by the Soviet Air Force. In 1996 the airport received the status of an international airport and since then is used for civil aviation purposes.[3]
2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
On 4 October 2020, the self-proclaimed Artsakh Republic said that they had hit Ganja's military airport, however, Azerbaijan said no military sites were hit.[4] Reporters of Russian TV channel Dozhd confirmed that the airport was not hit. There were only civilian planes on the runways, and the airport was closed in March due to coronavirus. Missiles hit residential buildings in the city, killing 1 person and wounding 32.[5] Turkish Air Force F-16 Vipers were based at the airport as of October 3, 2020.[6] However President Ilham Aliyev said these jets arrived to the country prior the conflict to participate in military exercises and they don't take part in any military actions.[7]
Facilities
The airport resides at an elevation of 1,083 feet (330 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 12/30 with an asphalt/concrete surface measuring 3,300 by 44 metres (10,827 ft × 144 ft).[8]
