History
The department was established in 2000 along with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. These two departments were intended to absorb most of the functions of the former Urban Council and Regional Council, which were dissolved at that time.
The Chief Executive announced in October 2005 in his policy address the plan to restructure the department into a new Food Safety, Inspection and Quarantine Department, with the responsibility of environmental hygiene transferred to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
Duties and operations
The department's responsibilities include food inspection, food standards, food safety licence issuing, refuse collection, street washing, hawker control, operation of Lunar New Year fairs, and municipal building cleansing. Facilities operated by the department include markets, cooked food centres, public toilets, slaughterhouses, refuse collection points, cemeteries, crematoriums, and columbariums.
Health Education Exhibition and Resources Centre
FEHD now manages the Health Education Exhibition and Resource Centre in Kowloon Park.
