Edakochi

Edakochi is one of the oldest districts in southern Kochi (or Cochin), India.It is the Gateway to the city of Kochi. It consists of many Churches and Edakochi is famous for Monsignor Lawrence Puliyanath and his tomb. It is surrounded by Palluruthy to the northwest and is separated from Aroor to the south and Kumbalam, Ernakulam to the east by the Kerala backwaters.

Bridges and roads

The Edakochi Kannangatt Bridge links Kannangat in Edakochi to the Indian Maritime University junction on NH 966B (Kundanoor Willingdon Highway). It was constructed by the Kerala Public Works Department.

The Edakochi Kannangat Willingdon Island Bridge was opened to the public in September 2017 by the Minister of Works, G. Sudhakaran, bringing the city closer to the Thevara and Kundanoor regions.

Buildings

The KCA Cricket Stadium is currently under construction. It will be located 15 km (9.3 mi) from South Railway Station, 18 km (11 mi) from North Railway Station, and 22 km (14 mi) from Kaloor.

Edakochi's St. Lawrence's Church[1] has gained fame as the burial place of Monsignor Lawrence Puliyanath.[2] The church at Edakochin is one of the oldest churches in Edakochi. The first church is believed to have been built around the time of the departure of St. Thomas Christians from Cranganore (Kodungallur). At that time, Cranganore had three important centers: Mattancherry, Mundamveli, and Edacochin. There seems to have been a church at Edacochin since the 9th century, as there were at Mattancherry and Mundamveli. This ancient church was dedicated to "The Three Kings".[1]

Edakochi is the birthplace of the late EK Narayanan, the former mayor of Kochi, and M.K. Narayanan, the former leader of the Paliyum movement. A Government of Kerala initiative for promoting fisheries was inaugurated by J. Mercykutty Amma, the Fisheries Minister.

Edakochi south is a ward in kochi corporation in Ernakulam District of Kerala State, India and belongs to Central Kerala Division . It is located 7 KM South from District headquarters Kakkanad, 2 KM from Palluruthy, and 201 KM from the State capital Thiruvananthapuram Kumbalam ( 3 KM ). Kochi ( 5 KM ) , Chellanam ( 6 KM ) , Maradu ( 7 KM ) , and Udayamperur ( 10 KM ) are the nearby Villages to Edakochi Ferry.[3]

Edakochi Ferry is surrounded by Vyttila Block and Kochi Block to the North , Thycattussery Block to the south South , and Mulanthuruthy Block to the East . Aroor , Kochi , Vaikom , Cherthala are the nearby Cities to Edakochi Ferry. It is located on the border of the Ernakulam District and Alappuzha District and near the Arabian sea.[4]
