VTA is expected to extend light rail service to Eastridge by 2025.[1]

Bus Rapid Transit plans
VTA is planning a bus rapid transit line from the downtown San Jose Diridon train station to the Alum Rock light rail station then along Capitol Expressway to Eastridge Mall. In March 2008, VTA announced that the state has awarded it $12.1 million for this project.[3][4]
VTA's plans mention the possibility of upgrading the system to light rail in the future. They have been actively planning such a light rail extension, contingent upon less-certain funding arrangements.[5]
