Dolia

Dolia (Odia: ଡୋଲିଆ) is a village in the Dhenkanal district of the Indian state of Odisha.[1] It is located in the Kankadahad block, and is administered by the Bam panchayat.[2] The village is located 63 km from the district headquarters Dhenkanal. The nearest town is Kamakshyanagar (30 km). Other nearby towns are Keonjhar (86 km from Dolia), Jajpur (122.8 km from Dolia) and Angul (63 km from Dolia).

Geography

Dolia is situated at longitude 21.133842 and latitude 85.492978. It is located in the apex of the small river named "Batonai". The land is suitable for agriculture. Winter, between November and the beginning of January, is characterized by long nights and a wind chill from the north. The sun sets around 5:30 p.m. IST in December. Between the middle of January to the middle of March, the climate is pleasant with temperatures ranging from 22.2 °C to 33.4 °C.

Festivals

Kartik Purnima is a major festival of the village. Residents of Dolia celebrate Akshaya Tritiya every year. Some other festivals including Raja Utshav, Bahuda Yatra, Valukuni Puja, Panchaka Mahotshav,Ganesh Puja,Saraswati Puja and Asta Prahara Nama Yagnya.

Agriculture

The major source of income for the population is the cultivation of rice and vegetables. Most of the agricultural lands are irrigated. The inhabitants try to get maximum benefit from them, cultivating more than two crops in a year. The main crops are rice, bananas, sugarcane, chickpeas, lentils, groundnuts, oil seeds, tropical vegetables, and medicinal herbs. The staple foods are rice with dal and curries.

  • Khechadi: A rice dish cooked with lentils.It is the Odia version of khichdi.
  • Palau: A rice dish made from vegetables and raisins. It is the Odia version of pilaf.
  • Kanika: A sweet rice dish, garnished with raisins and nuts.
  • Ghee Rice: A rice dish, fried with ghee and cinnamon.

Dals and curries

  • Dalma: A dish made from dal and vegetables.It is generally made from toor dal and contains chopped vegetables like green papaya, unripe banana, eggplant, pumpkin, gourd etc. It is garnished with turmeric, mustard seeds, and panch phutana. There are several variations of this dish.
  • Santula: A dish finely chopped vegetables which are sauteed with garlic, green chillies, mustard and various spices. It has several variations.
  • Chaatu Rai: A dish made from mushrooms and mustard.
  • Alu Potala Rosa: Curry made from potato and parval.
  • Kadali Manja Rai: A curry made from banana plant stem and mustard seeds. Manja refers to the stem which can also be used in dalma.

  • Khatta refers to a type of sour side dish or chutney usually served with Odia thalis.
  • Dahi Baigana: A sour dish made from yoghurt and egg plants.

  • Odias typically eat loads of cooked green leaves of various types. They are prepared by adding "pancha phutana", with or without onion/garlic and are best enjoyed with pakhala. Dolia Village is comes under Bam GP of Kankdahad Block and Sarpanch of BAM GP Name is Bharati Sahoo. Dolia is part of Dhenkanal (Lok Sabha constituency). The current MP of Lok Sabha is Tathagata Satapathy of BJD, and the current MLA for Dolia (Parjang Assembly Constituency) is Dr. Nrusing Charan Sahoo of the Biju Janata Dal party, who won the seat in the state elections of 2014.
