Digambar Kamat

Digambar Kamat (born 8 March 1954) is an Indian politician. He was the Chief Minister of Goa from June 2007 to March 2012. Manohar Parikar succeeded him after his term as the Chief Minister of Goa.[1] Since 2006, he has been the president of Swimming Federation of India.[2] Currently, he serves as the Leader of Opposition in Goa Legislative Assembly.

Early life

Digambar was born in Margao. He holds a bachelor's degree in science (BSc).[3]

Political career

Digambar Vasantrao Kamat started his career as a member of Indian National Congress. In 1994, he chose stay with his loyal voters of Margao constituency and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Coalition government. In 2005, he joined once again the Indian National Congress in support of Margao constituency voters referendum choice. He climbed the ladder of success with sheer hard work and determination to the people of Goa and was the sole stable choice to lead the state as Chief Minister for a full term of 2007-2012. During the tenure the Goa State social and economic success hit new heights of Gross Domestic Product. Kamat passed the baton of leadership on 6 March 2012, to a BJP majority government in the Goa Assembly Elections held in March 2012. He retained his Margao Constituency seat and continued his selfless work until 2019 as elected legislative member of Margao Constituency. On 17th July 2019, Digambar Kamat was unanimously chosen a leader of opposition of Goa Legislative Assembly representing the Indian National Congress. He is an ardent lover of swimming and badminton.

Personal life

Digambar is married to Asha and has two children Dipali and Yogiraj.
