Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005

Belgium was represented at Eurovision 2005 by Nuno Resende and the song "Le Grand Soir" (The big night). The song was written by Frédéric Zeitoun and composed by Alec Mansion.

Nuno Guilherme de Figueiredo Resende was born in Porto, Portugal, on 25 June 1973. His family immigrated to Belgium where Nuno received his degree in physical education. He started his career in the basement of his house, surrounded by his guitar and a couple of friends. Nuno also had a stage career where he performed in musicals such as Belle et la Bête, Roméo et Juliette, and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. In the 2000 Belgian national final, Nuno competed as the lead singer of the group La Teuf who finished 6th with the song "Soldat d'amour".

Before Eurovision

National final

The Belgian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 took place on 20 March 2005 at the RTBF studios, hosted by Jean-Louis Lahaye and Jean-Pierre Hautier and broadcast on La Une, RTBF Sat and VivaCité.[1]

Competing entries

RTBF announced on 10 December 2004 that artists and composers were able to submit their entries until 3 January 2005. Composers were required to be Belgian, and songs were required to be performed in French.[2][3] 110 entries were submitted, and on 10 March 2005, the broadcaster announced the two entries selected for the national final.[4][5]

Final

The final took place on 20 March 2005, which simultaneously celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest. The winner, "Le grand soir" performed by Nuno Resende, was determined solely by a public televote.

At Eurovision

Because Belgium placed 22nd at the 2004 contest, Nuno was forced to compete in the Eurovision semi-final. Nuno had a very simple performance, which was effective in expressing the meaning of his song. Nuno was alone on stage throughout the whole song just singing his heart out he performed 11th, following Iceland and preceding the Estonia he came 22nd with 29 points failing to qualify to the Grand Final. Therefore, Belgium will have to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2006.
