Drummer Dominic Howard provides the heavy metal flavor to the song, while retaining the signature Muse sound. Sputnikmusic wrote that Howard's drumming on the song "is the best on the album, and is probably the best he's ever done."[2]
While "Assassin" was performed frequently before its release on the US Campus Invasion Tour 2005, it was a much rarer song on the Black Holes and Revelations Tour, and has only made occasional appearances in years since. The song's intro was performed on the Simulation Theory World Tour as part of a medley with ""Stockholm Syndrome", "New Born", "Reapers", and "The Handler".
