The song premiered of Major's Soundcloud on April 3, 2013 gathering 1 million streams in its first day. The feature was Miley Cyrus's first single since 2012. It was officially released on April 4, 2013 by Berhane Sound System as a promotional single on iTunes. Later it was announced that the song would be released as the album's first official single and that will have a music video. An audio and a lyric video were uploaded to Snoop's official YouTube VEVO channel. On April 4, 2013, "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" featuring Miley Cyrus, produced by Major Lazer, Ariel Rechtshaid and Dre Skull, was made available for purchase via digital download as the lead single from the album.[1][2] It officially impacted U.S. Rhythmic contemporary radio on April 29, 2013[3] and then U.S Top 40/Mainstream radio on May 28.[4]

The video was filmed in April, 2013 by director P. R. Brown and premiered on Snoop Lion's Vevo on May 30, 2013.[5]
