Andorra in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004

Andorra took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2004. The country was represented by Marta Roure and the song "Jugarem a estimar-nos". The song was chosen through a national final, 12 Punts, which was jointly organized by Andorran broadcaster Ràdio i Televisió d'Andorra (RTVA) and Catalan broadcaster TV3.[1]

Before Eurovision

12 Punts

12 Punts (English: 12 Points) was the national final organised by RTVA and TV3 that consisted of nine shows: six heats, two semi-finals and a final, held between 18 January 2004 and 15 March 2004, all taking place at the Auditori Nacional d'Andorra in Ordino, hosted by Pati Molné and Xavier Graset and broadcast on RTVA and TV3. The winner was decided upon through a combination of public SMS voting and an expert jury panel.

Format

The selection of the Andorran Eurovision entry took place over two rounds. The first round was the auditions, where artists applied for the competition by attending an audition on 26 October 2003.[2] Two finalists were selected to proceed to the second round, the televised national final. The national final consisted of six heats, two semi-finals and a final. Two entries competed in each heat between 18 January and 22 February 2004 and one song qualified to the semi-finals from each heat. Three entries (one of them being performed as a duet between the two finalists) competed in each semi-final on 1 and 8 March 2004 and one song qualified to the final from each semi-final. The two qualifying entries competed in the final on 15 March 2004 where the overall winner was selected over two rounds: the first round selected the song and the second round selected the winning combination of artist and song. The results of all shows were determined by a combination of public SMS voting in Andorra (1/7), public SMS voting in Catalonia (1/7) and a five-member jury (5/7). The jury panel consisted of Marc Llunas (singer), Salvador Cufí (representative of Música Global record company), Catheryne Metayer (director of the Cor de Petits Cantors d'Andorra), Josep Maria Escribano (director of the Conservatory of Andorra) and Oriol Vilella (musician).[3]

Competing entries

Auditions took place on 26 October 2003 at the Fira d'Andorra in Andorra la Vella. The minimum age to audition was 16 and applicants were required to be able to speak Catalan.[2] Out of 40 applicants, 6 candidates qualified for the next stage by a public televote. An additional three candidates: Bis a Bis, Jordi Botey and Marta Roure were invited by RTVA as established artists and directly qualified for the next stage. A professional jury ultimately selected the two finalists for 12 Punts.[4] The twelve competing songs were announced on 1 January 2004 and an album of all the songs performed during the series was released on CD. One of the songs, "No és nou", became a hit later in 2006 by Catalan rock group Gossos featuring Beth.[5]

Heats

The heats took place weekly between 18 January 2004 and 22 February 2004. One song per heat was selected to qualify for the semi-finals.

Semi-final 2

The second semi-final took place on 8 March 2004. "Jugarem a estimar-nos" performed by Marta Roure was selected to qualify for the final.

Final

The final took place on 15 March 2004. The two finalists each performed their versions of "Jugarem a estimar-nos" and "Terra" and the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. The first round was the song selection which selected "Jugarem a estimar-nos" as the winning song and the second round was the artist selection which selected Marta Roure as the winning act.[6][7]

At Eurovision

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, a semi-final round was introduced in order to accommodate the influx of nations that wanted to compete in the contest. Andorra competed in the semi-final on 9 May. Marta Roure did not qualify for the final, placing in 18th place with 12 points awarded by Spain.
