2021 Kosovan presidential election

Indirect presidential elections will be held in Kosovo in February or March 2021, with a second or third round if necessary. The constitution states that the presidential election must be held 30 days before the end of the current president's term. This will be the fifth presidential elections.

Background

The Former President of Kosovo Hashim Thaçi took office on 7 April 2016, but resigned to 5 November 2020, and was accused of the murder of nearly 100 civilians during the Kosovo War. Thaçi was be eligible for re-election for a second and final five-year term in 2021.

Resignation of Thaçi

Hashim Thaçi resigned on 5 November 2020 after the Hague-based Specialist Chambers confirmed a war crime indictment against him. Thaçi was replaced as Acting President by Vjosa Osmani, the Assembly's speaker.[1] Hashim Thaçi's actual mandate would end in 2021, but after Thaçi's resignation, the elections for President of Kosovo will be held earlier.

Electoral system

In order to be elected, a candidate is required to receive at least 81 votes in the first two rounds of voting, equivalent to two-thirds of the 120 members of the Assembly. In the third round, held between the top two candidate of the second, the requirement is reduced to a simple majority of 61 votes.[2]
