Background
The Former President of Kosovo Hashim Thaçi took office on 7 April 2016, but resigned to 5 November 2020, and was accused of the murder of nearly 100 civilians during the Kosovo War. Thaçi was be eligible for re-election for a second and final five-year term in 2021.
Resignation of Thaçi
Hashim Thaçi resigned on 5 November 2020 after the Hague-based Specialist Chambers confirmed a war crime indictment against him. Thaçi was replaced as Acting President by Vjosa Osmani, the Assembly's speaker.[1] Hashim Thaçi's actual mandate would end in 2021, but after Thaçi's resignation, the elections for President of Kosovo will be held earlier.
