After a year absence, Derrick Rose returned to action during the season opener in Miami, but on November 22, 2013, at Portland he injured his meniscus in his right knee and was once again put on injured reserve, ending his season after 10 games.
Besides losing Rose, on January 7, 2014, the Bulls traded Luol Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Bynum, who was waived immediately after the trade. This was the Bulls' first season since 2003-04 that Deng was not on the roster.
