2009 in Malaysia

This article lists important figures and events in Malaysian public affairs during the year 2009, together with the deaths of notable Malaysians. Malaysia hosted the 2009 ASEAN Para Games between 15 and 19 August. Malaysia recorded more than 2,000 confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1) ("swine flu") and 76 deaths during a world pandemic of the disease.

January

• 1 January – Compulsory use of rear seat belts was enforced.[1]
• 1 January – The Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) changed its name to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).[2]
• 1 January – Graphic images on cigarette packs to show the adverse long-term effects of excessive smoking were introduced.[3]
• 2 January – Ten people were killed and five injured in an accident involving three vehicles at Gua Musang Highway near Bukit Sejuk, Gua Musang, Kelantan.[4]
• 12 January – Members of parliament from the government and the opposition joined forces to condemn the Israeli incursion into Gaza. The Parliament passed the ten resolutions of a special Parliament sitting on Israel's atrocities in Gaza to the United States Congress and parliaments of Britain and the European Union.[5]
• 12 January – A rock slide at the Perak Caves Buddhist temple built into a cave killed one person and trapped more than a dozen others for hours near Ipoh, Perak.[6]
• 6–17 January – 2009 Kuala Terengganu by elections. Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) candidate Abdul Wahid Endut won this election with a total majority of 2,631 votes beating the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Farid Wan Salleh.[7]
• 23 January – Suspected car thief Kugan Ananthan, aged 22, died five days after being arrested by police in Subang Jaya. Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail classified Kugan's death as murder.[8]

February

• 3 February – The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah celebrated the Silver Jubilee of his reign in the state of Perak.[9]
• 4 February – The Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government in Perak collapsed. Barisan Nasional (BN) claimed control over Perak to form a new government.[10]
• 6 February – Pangkor state assemblyman, Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (Barisan Nasional (BN)-UMNO) sworn in as the new Menteri Besar of Perak in front of Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar.[11] Malaysian police fired teargas at Pakatan Rakyat (PR) supporters protesting against the government seizing power in state of Perak, widening a tense political standoff.[12]
• 9 February – V. Arumugam, the Kedah exco member and Bukit Selambau state assemblyman, resigned from his exco and state assembly seats.[13]
• 9–15 February – Le Tour de Langkawi 2009
• 14 February – Collection of toll at the PJS 2 toll plaza heading toward Kuala Lumpur on the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) near Petaling Jaya, Selangor was abolished.[14]
• 17 February – Elizabeth Wong, the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) legislator and Bukit Lanjan Selangor's state assemblyman, resigned after photos of her sleeping nude were spread via MMS.[15]
• 18 February – Menteri Besar of Perak, Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir was suspended for 18 months from attending the state legislative assembly.[16]
• 24 February – The official launching of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
• 25 February – The Salak Jaya toll plaza (south bound) on Sungai Besi Expressway was abolished and the future expansion of the Besraya Expressway to the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 near Pandan was announced.[17][18]

March

• 3 March – Three Malaysians were among seven people were killed in a hotel blaze in Taipei, Taiwan.[19]
• 3 March – Thousands of people were left trapped and stranded in buildings, bus stations or light rail transit stations in Kuala Lumpur following flash floods after a heavy downpour at 3pm.[20]
• 7 March – Riot police fired tear gas into several hundreds of people marching from Masjid Negara to Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur to protest the use of English in the teaching of Mathematics and Science.[21]
• 16 March – RTM's third channel, Muzik Aktif was launched, broadcasting from Angkasapuri, Kuala lumpur.[22]
• 16 March – Limbang district was officially part of Malaysia as Brunei dropped its long-standing claim over Sarawak's Limbang district when the two countries resolved various land and maritime territory disputes.[23]
• 17 March – Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Wira Mohd Ali Rustam was suspended from contesting the post of UMNO deputy president as he was found guilty under Article 10.1 of the UMNO Members Code of Ethics, meaning it was deemed that a bribery offence and money politics had been committed by his agents.[24]
• 26 March – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin won the UMNO deputy president election with 1,575 votes beating Tan Sri Muhammad Taib with 916 votes.[25]
• 28 March – The lights of the world's tallest twin towers, Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the city of Putrajaya were turned off during Earth Hour.[26]

April

• 2 April – 1Malaysia (One Malaysia) concept was launched.[27]
• 3 April – Najib Tun Razak became the sixth Malaysian Prime Minister, replacing Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
• 4 April – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad rejoined UMNO.[28]
• 7 April – The by-elections for Bukit Gantang, Bukit Selambau and Batang Ai. Barisan Nasional (BN) won in Batang Ai and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) won in Bukit Selambau and Bukit Gantang.[29]
• 9 April – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.[30]
• 13 April – Six people were killed in a double-decker express bus crash at km 443 of the North–South Expressway near Rawang, Selangor.[31]
• 14 April – Kota Iskandar in Nusajaya became Johor's state new administrative capital after Johor Bahru.[32]
• 14 April – Proton Exora, the first Proton's MPV was launched.[33]
• 16 April – Penang Deputy Chief Minister and state assemblyperson Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin resigned as the state assembly seat of Penanti regarding allegations over his non-performance in public office and corruption allegations[34]
• 24 April – Lumut, the home base of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) was declared "Naval Town".[35]
• 27 April – The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) celebrated its Diamond Jubilee (75th anniversary).

May

• 7 May – Perak State Assembly in chaos, Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state Speaker V. Sivakumar removed from the assembly, ex-Sungkai state assemblyman Datuk S. Ganesan took his oath as the new Speaker. Police arrested dozens of protesters, including three opposition MPs, in a standoff near the Perak State Secretariat Building in Ipoh.[36]
• 9 May – Three of the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) leaders were released.[37]
• 9 May – Singapore's most-wanted fugitive or Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leader, Mas Selamat Kastari was arrested in Skudai, Johor.[38]
• 11 May – The High Court ruled Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin the legitimate Menteri Besar of Perak, but Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir was still Menteri Besar.[39]
• 15 May – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • Ministry of Health confirmed the first case of influenza A (H1N1) infection of a 21-year-old male student who had arrived at the KLIA on 13 May via a Malaysia Airlines flight (MH091) from Newark and on transit at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.[40]
• 18 May – Barisan Nasional (BN) would not contest the 31 May Penanti by-election in Penang.[41]
• 22 May – The Appeal Court ruled Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir the legitimate Menteri Besar of Perak.[42]
• 22 May – Malaysia planned to build the third crossing bridge connecting Pengerang in the eastern of Johor to Changi in Singapore.[43]
• 26 May – Hunger strike in Perak: 19 Pakatan Rakyat (PR) assemblymen and supporters were arrested then released on police bail about five hours later after having had their statements recorded.[44]
• 29 May – Jaya Supermarket in Petaling Jaya, Selangor collapsed while being torn down for redevelopment. Seven workers were killed mostly Indonesians.[45]
• 31 May – Penanti by-election, 2009, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate Mansor Othman won this election with a total majority of 1048 votes beating three independent candidates Aminah Abdullah, Nai-Khan Ari and Kamarul Ramizu Idris.[46]

June

• 1 June – TV3 celebrated its 25th anniversary.[47]
• 2 June – The roof of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu collapsed.[48]
• 3 June – Najib Tun Razak visited China for the first time in 35 years and met the premier Wen Jiabao.[49]
• 6 June – Late wife of the fifth Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Endon Mahmood conferred the Seri Setia Mahkota Malaysia (SSM) which carries the title "Tun", by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.[50]
• 7–17 June – 2009 Men's Hockey Junior World Cup Malaysia–Singapore
• 16 June – The 41-year-old "General" Nor Azami Ahmad Ghazali, leader of the illegal Federal Special Forces of Malaysia (FSFM) and 42 people were arrested in Taman Gombak Jaya, Selangor.[51]
• 17 June – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • First local infection of influenza A(H1N1) reported involving the 19th case as that person had no history of having travelled to a country that had the flu.[52]
• 18 June – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin declared that all visitors and Malaysians returning from abroad would be required to fill in the health declaration form following the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic around the world.[53]
• 21 June – World's No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia defeated Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat to win the Indonesia Super Series.[54]
• 22 June – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • The SJKC Jalan Davidson Chinese primary school in Kuala Lumpur became the first school to be closed due to the Influenza A (H1N1) virus.[55]
• 22 June – MEASAT-3A satellite was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.[56]

July

• 1 July – The Kedah DAP decided to quit the Pakatan Rakyat, citing "undelivered promises" by the state government as one of the reasons.[57]
• 8 July – The Cabinet decided that all national primary and secondary schools would teach Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language) and mother tongue for national-type primary schools beginning in 2012.[58]
• 11 July – Najib Tun Razak marked his 100 days as a Prime Minister. He announced 11 people-friendly measures to all Malaysians – including a toll discount for frequent users and a new trust fund – to address some longstanding public grievances.[59]
• 14 July – Manek Urai by-election, 2009, PAS candidate Mohd Fauzi Abdullah won this election with a total majority of 65 votes beating Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat.[60]
• 14 July – Beginning 1 September, the 20 per cent expressway toll rebate given to motorists who paid toll charges more than 80 times a month, could be saved for up to six months. The rebate could be redeemed at 126 locations which would be announced in due time.[61]
• 14 July – Malaysia's second micro satellite Razak SAT was launched into orbit.[62]
• 16 July – The political secretary of Seri Kembangan state assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, Teoh Beng Hock, 30 was found dead at the premises of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Selangor state headquarters at its 14th floor office in Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam.[63]

• 23 July – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • A 30-year-old Indonesian man became the first victim death from influenza A(H1N1). However, the Health Minister, Datuk Liow Tiong Lai revealed that the flu was not the direct cause of the victim's death since this man suffered from multiple medical condition, including obesity and enlarged heart.[64]
• 26 July – A road collapse at Lorong Gelugor near Jalan San Peng, Kuala Lumpur forced the evacuation of residents of 22 units of Public Works Department (JKR) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) quarters.[65]
• 27 July – The new Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building in Kuching, Sarawak was officially opened by Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.[66]
• 31 July – The Amanah Sahah 1Malaysia (AS1M) scheme was launched.[67]

August

• 1 August – Riot police fired water cannons and tear gas, and arrested dozens of demonstrators in the anti-ISA rally in Kuala Lumpur.[68]
• 9 August – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • The death toll from the influenza A(H1N1) reached 26 people. The government was considering drastic measures to contain the situation.[69]
• 9 August – The teaching of Mathematics and Science in English would be extended to 2014. The current cohort of students studying Mathematics and Science in English could continue to do so until they finished secondary school.
• 11 August – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • Total confirmed cases of the influenza A(H1N1) reached 2,253.[70]
• 14 August – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • The death toll of the influenza A(H1N1) reached 56 people.
• 15 August – 2009 ASEAN Para Games :
  • The 2009 ASEAN Para Games opening ceremony was held in Putra Indoor Stadium. The games were opened by former Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.[71]
  • This was the second time Malaysia hosted the games and its first time since 2001.[71]
  • Around 980 athletes from ten nations participated at the Games, which featured 409 events in eleven sports.[71]
• 16 August – A British pilot was killed when his plane crashed during takeoff on a test flight in Tekah Airfield, Taiping, Perak.[72]
• 17 August – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • The death toll from influenza A(H1N1) reached 64. The government considered declaring a national health emergency.[73]
• 19 August – Nine Chinese crew members of Liberian-registered tanker MT Formosa Product Brick, were lost when it caught fire after a collision with a bulk carrier in the Straits of Malacca near Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.[74]
• 19 August – 2009 ASEAN Para Games :
  • The 2009 ASEAN Para Games closing ceremony was held in the Putra Indoor Stadium. The games were closed by Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmad Shabery Cheek.[71]
  • Malaysia won 94 gold medals, 81 silver medals and 71 bronze medals in this games and ranked overall in second place.[71]
• 20 August – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • Malaysia recorded its highest number of influenza A(H1N1) cases in a day with 69 infections.
• 20 August – A four-wheel drive belonging to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was damaged when someone threw a Molotov cocktail at the vehicle parked at the old district and land office in Klang, Selangor.[75]
• 23 August – Lunas state assemblyman Mohd Radzhi Salleh quit Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to become an independent member of the Kedah state legislative assembly.[76]
• 25 August – Permatang Pasir by-election, 2009, PAS candidate Salleh Man won this election with a total majority of 4,551 votes beating Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates Rohaizat Othman.[77]
• 27 August – MCA deputy president, Chua Soi Lek was sacked from the party.[78]
• 31 August – The 52nd Merdeka Day celebration was held at the Malaysian Houses of Parliament for the first time.[79]
• 31 August – An express train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, carrying 243 passengers, derailed in Batu Enam near Segamat, Johor, injuring 17 passengers including three Singaporeans.[80]

September

• 1 September – French "Spider-Man" Alain Robert was arrested after successfully scaling Petronas Towers, in his third attempt on the nation's tallest structure.[81]
• 3 September – Malaysia's first ever submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman arrived in Port Klang, Selangor.[82]
• 9 September – The Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (MUFROS) 090909 campaign was launched.[83]
• 11 September – Two pilots in a light aircraft were killed when the aircraft crashed as it was coming in to land at the Langkawi International Airport on Langkawi Island, Kedah.[84]
• 14 September – 19 houses at the Kampung Buah Pala in Penang were demolished.[85]
• 15 September – The new Malaysia's own Formula One team, "Lotus F1 Racing" was launched.
• 15 September – 2009 flu pandemic :
  • The death toll from influenza A (H1N1) reached 76.[86]
• 17 September – A regional militant leader and terrorist, Noordin Mat Top was killed during a police raid in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia.[87]
• 25 September – The Automated Enforcement System (AES) was introduced for all expressways and highways in Malaysia.

October

• 1 October – The National Language Month of Bulan Bahasa Kebangsaan was launched.[88]
• 2 October – The body of a regional militant leader and terrorist, Noordin Mat Top was brought back to Malaysia and buried at Kampung Kayu Ara Pasong in Pontian, Johor.[89]
• 4 October – Najib Tun Razak visited France for the first time and met the president Nicolas Sarkozy.[90]
• 8 October – A fire broke out on board KD Sri Inderapura in Lumut Naval Base, Perak.[91]
• 11 October – Bagan Pinang by-election, 2009, Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad won this election with a total majority of 5,435 votes beating PAS candidates Zulkefly Mohamad Omar.[92]
• 19 October – Malaysia Day on 16 September was declared as the annual national public holiday starting from 2010.[93]
• 26 October – Tuanku Muhriz was installed as the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.[94]
• 26 October – About 22 schoolchildren were feared drowned after plunging into a river when a suspension bridge they were crossing collapsed in Kuala Dipang near Kampar, Perak. 19 people were found safe and three others dead.[95]
• 28 October – Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan resigned as vice-president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in Sabah.[96]
• 29 October – Port Klang state assemblyman Badrul Hisham Abdullah quit Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) with immediate effect to become an independent representative supporting the Barisan Nasional (BN).[97]
• 30 October – An Eagle light aircraft of the Royal Selangor Flying Club (RSFC) crashed near the Beringin Golf Club in Lembah Beringin near Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, killing the trainee pilot who was flying solo from Ipoh to Subang.[98]

November

• 1 November – Former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin was arrested by the Selangor Religious Affairs Department (JAIS) officials as he was conducting a religious class.[99]
• 3 November – A massive landslide in Selayang, Selangor forced the closure of the Kuala Lumpur–Rawang Highway.[100]
• 4 November – Kelantan was awarded the "Wang Ehsan" compassionate payment from the federal government from the state's offshore oil production revenue starting 2010.[101]
• 7–23 November – A massive flash flood hit Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. Two died and 5,000 people were evacuated.
• 10 November – Chinese president Hu Jintao visited Malaysia, the first Chinese head of state to do so in fifteen years.[102]
• 16 November – The Kota Siputeh state seat in Kedah was declared vacant by the High Court.[103]
• 18 November – Former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin went on trial at the Gombak Timur Lower Syariah Court, Selangor on a charge of teaching aspects related to Islam without certification.[104]
• 21 November – The body of the political secretary of Seri Kembangan state assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, Teoh Beng Hock was exhumed from the Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih, Selangor for a second autopsy at Sungai Buloh Hospital.[105]
• 23 November – Perodua Alza, the first Perodua's MPV was launched.[106]
• 24 November – The body of the political secretary of Seri Kembangan state assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, Teoh Beng Hock was laid to rest for the second time, three days after his remains were exhumed for a second autopsy at Sungai Buloh Hospital.[107]
• 25 November – The Selangor state government issued a ban prohibiting state civil servants, employees of state subsidiaries, and students at state-owned institutions from attending the National Civics Bureau or "Biro Tata Negara" (BTN) courses.[108]
• 30 November – A powerful explosion ripped through a mamak restaurant in Stulang, near Johor Bahru, Johor, jolting dozens of nearby residents from their sleep. No one was injured in the incident, which was believed to have been caused by a powerful bomb made of plastic explosives.[109]

December

• 2 December – The Penang state government followed Selangor's action in banning all state civil servants from attending National Civics Bureau or "Biro Tata Negara" (BTN) courses.[110]
• 4 December – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan resigned.[111]
• 6 December – Two nursing students at a private college were killed and four others injured when a car plunged from the third-floor car park of the KB Mall shopping complex and landed on the shopping area in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.[112]
• 9 December – Najib Tun Razak and Thai prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva visited Narathiwat in Southern Thailand.[113]
